Beloved husband of Ruth McNeill; loving father Burleigh (Mary) and Thomas Opyt; loving stepfather of John (Joan), Lois (Orville), Haag and Ronald (Kathy) McNeill; dear grandfather of Toni Marie and nine other grandchildren; fond brother of Sue (Karol) Szwet; uncle of many nieces and nephews. Funeral service Thursday, 10 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 9848 S. Winchester. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Il. Visitation Wednesday, 3 to 9 p.m., Masonic services, 7:30 p.m. at Donnellan/O'Donnell-Bartz- Schultz Funeral Home, 10525 S. Western Ave. Member of LaMoille Lodge #270. Kindly omit flowers. Webmaster's Notes: John Robert Opyt, RM3c enlisted in the US Navy July 20, 1942 at Chicago, IL. He reported aboard the USS Sigsbee DD-502 April 26, 1943 from NOB Trinidad, BWI. John was transferred from the DD-502, December 26, 1944 to RS San Francisco, CA for reassignment by CWSF. John will be missed by all of his Sigsbee-Reunion shipmates and friends.. John was active in the Masonic Charity, Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc. Chicago, IL. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family
