Hello,
Great Sigsbee website. Thanks for all your hard work!
I am helping a friend look for photos of his father who served on the Sigsbee during 1945. You have a picture of a document on your webshots page entitled purpleheart etc and his father's signature is on it along with Milton Morgan's. I saw Mr. Morgan's photo in one of the reunion albums and wondered if you knew of anyone had any cruise books from that time. Also, do you know how one could contact Mr. Morgan?
Looking for a photo of Lt. John L. Marks.
Thanks,
Jeff Kingsley

Billy I would like to thank you for the (History of the USS Sigsbee DD-502) book you sent previously and the DVD I received last week. The painting copies enclosed with the book were in perfect condition upon arrival. Your work and effort on the web page and information research is a very fitting tribute to the veterans who served on the Sigsbee. I am enclosing Uncle Shermans only surviving brother (Harold Millirans) address.
Thanks so much!

I finally accepted it, but the information you sent me gave me a much better picture of what happened and how he was killed. The pictures, battle formation, history of the Sigsbee, and the memorial were much appreciated. The hats will be worn. I have shown this site to my granddaughter (Maddy) she is five years old and it gives her a sense of being with my father. She recognizes his picture on the site and tells me that we can visit grandpa Jerry in the computer. My father truly enjoyed his Navel service and told me his big regret was not completing his 20 years for retirement. He told me that in 1969 and I’ve never forgotten it and to that point I have been in the military (regular Air Force and Air Force reserve) for over 26 years. We will all miss my Dad; he was a hell of a man. Mike Lombardi Gentlemen, I am writing on behave of my father Gerald L Lombardi, my dad served aboard the USS Sigsbee and was WIA during the Kamikaze attack that April 14, 1945. I am very saddened to say that my father passed away on March 18, 2005 in Chandler Arizona. I had my father buried at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix Arizona with full military honors. My father was proud of his 10 plus years in the US Navy and very proud of his service aboard the USS Sigsbee. When I found your site a few years ago I showed the site to my dad and that was all he could talk about for weeks he was so proud, and actually there is a photo of him (dad) with Vincent Palmieri on one of the links on the Sigsbee history page, Dad has a copy of that photo in his Navy album, as well as several of the pictures of the US Sigsbee prior to the Kamikaze attack. I just wanted you to know of his passing and perhaps you could change him in your WIA information as deceased. My father had two sons myself and my brother Jerry, we both served in the armed forces I was and still am in the Air Force and my brother in the Army. We both received and very strong sense of service and work ethic from my dad and we will always be grateful for that. We will truly miss my dad, he was a good man. When I get a copy of his obituary I will forward to you for possible inclusion in you web site. Thank you for all you have done by maintaining this site, through it and you I will be able to visit my dad from time to time. Very Respectfully, Michael Lombardi

He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Gallup, after his honorable discharge from the Navy in April 1946. My father did not speak a lot about the war, but when he did you could hear the excitement in his voice. How proud he was of his life aboard the Sigsbee, and how fond he was of his shipmates! My parents vacationed in Hawaii in the 1970's and while there, my father called his old captain and friend, Rear Admiral Chung-Hoon. My parents were invited to his home, where they sat and reminisced about old times aboard the Sigsbee. In 1988, my dad died. He was survived by his wife Barbara, his three children Jean, myself (Harold Hillis, Jr.), and John, and his four grandchildren, Julie and David VanderKilish and Ben and Emily Hillis. I am presently putting together my dad's old Navy pictures, letters, and your wonderful web site as a Christmas gift to my mother. Dad would have loved to see your site as much as I did. When we are young, we are never terribly interested in what our parents have to say, and I am afraid that I was typical. I became interested in hearing more about his time about Sigsbee much later than I should have. As I recall, he said that his nickname aboard was "Deacon" as he did not drink or smoke. He once told me that he was the Captain's messenger, whether for Cdr. Russell, or Cdr. Chung-Hoon, or both, I do not know. He said that his battle station was as "first loader on a 4Omm", I do not recall which one. Presuming that it was a dual-40, and since he was left handed, I surmise that he probably served the right-sided gun, but that is a pure guess on my part. I would be interested in hearing from any of his old shipmates who remember him. Thank you, and God Bless you for your service to our Country. I printed it and will add it to my files about Dad. I never served in the military, so I have little insight in to the everyday workings of the Navy or any other service branch. I have read several books that dealt with war, have seen various TV shows and some movies, but none of this is like living the real thing. I have always been interested in the small details of life, whether military or civilian, whether of common U.S. citizens or of people of other cultures and countries. Dad had five sons, no daughters. None of the sons served in the military. We were all exempted for one reason or another. Because of the circumstances under which Dad served (he was drafted at the age of 35, was a school teacher and the father of three, was wounded in service of his country) I always figured that he served for all of us. It seems to me that I read recently about five brothers who were all killed during WWII. What a price for that family to pay so that the rest of us could be free! You might be interested to know that today my wife, Mary Lou, and I visited Ripley, WV where we got to see and hear President Bush and others speak at the Fourth of July celebrations there. Senator Jay Rockefeller, Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito and Governor Bob Wise all spoke. This celebration honors our veterans each year and all spoke about the service those veterans render and have rendered. One of the speakers said that we should seek out and thank those who are now and have in the past served our country. I agree. Therefore, I extend to you, Billy Roberts, thanks for sending me information regarding Dad's Navy days and thanks for serving in our military so that others such as I can enjoy the freedom of this great nation. Thank you for putting your life on the line so that others would not have to. Hold your head proud. Sincerely, Dave Hamilton, Son of Sigsbee crewman John B. Hamilton. *Site owner's note: >>>>>George, Francis, Madison, Joseph and Albert, the Sullivan brothers died when their ship, USS JUNEAU (CL 52), sank after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during the battle for Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942.<<<<<

I understand the ship was named after my great-grandfather, R.Adm. Charles D. Sigsbee. My father, Charles D. Sigsbee, III served in WWII in the Army (and was part of the landings at Normandy). He passed away while I was young, after the war, and I wonder if he was aware of the ship bearing the family name. I love seeing the pictures and reading about the USS Sigsbee. I feel very connected. However, I'm also saddened that she met such a terrible fate-- and saddened for all her sailors for such a tragedy. Cheryl Sigsbee
